Garment Care
At FERN, we work with the most luxurious materials to ensure your garment fits beautifully and honors the craft of quality textile construction. Along with purchasing one of our luxury pieces comes an increased responsibility of care. Following the steps below should help ensure your garment stays in beautiful condition as you live and love in it. Should you have any specific questions, feel free to contact us.
General Recommendations
- Hand wash in lukewarm or cold water using a natural, gentle detergent. Some garments are dry clean only.
- Do not wring or machine dry. Carefully hang (wovens) or lay flat (knits) and air dry in shade.
- Iron garments inside out.
- Never place a bra in a washing machine or dryer — this damages fibers, cup structure, and can cause underwire to pop out.
- Avoid non-smooth surfaces that could snag your garment.
- Store on padded hangers to prevent stretching.
Recommended Dry Cleaner
For specialized dry cleaning, we recommend Winzer Cleaners of Queens, NY, who offer complimentary delivery and pick-up services.
Silk Care
No need to be afraid of caring for silk. Silk is soft, breathable, and naturally regulates body temperature. Dry clean or hand wash with a delicate, natural laundry detergent in cold water — cold water best preserves color. Do not wash with other colors. Plan on a short soak and air dry flat. Do not wring. For stains, apply a small amount of dish soap to the spot and gently rub before submerging. Iron on the interior at approximately 110 degrees, minimizing steam. Do not wash pleated silk.
Lace Care
Treat lace as you would silk. Hand wash in cold water with natural detergent. Note: some stiffer laces will lose body after 1–2 washes — to preserve structure, keep washing to a minimum. When ironing, keep the iron cool (around 110 degrees) and lightly press. Use a pressing cloth (such as a piece of silk organza) to prevent transfers or staining from the iron.
Synthetic Blend Care
Our synthetic blends include fibers like Spandex, Nylon, and Polyester for a form-fitting garment. Hand wash with a delicate, natural detergent, or machine wash on a delicate cycle in cold water. Air dry flat.
Corsets & Structured Pieces
Spot clean only — do not fully submerge. Professional dry cleaning is recommended for thorough cleaning. Store flat to maintain boning integrity.
Wool Crepe
Dry clean recommended. Steam to remove wrinkles. Store on padded hangers with adequate spacing.
